The Los Angeles County coroner says Bennington, who sold millions of albums with a unique mix of rock, hip-hop and rap, has died in his home near Los Angeles. But an updated report from the website said that the singer’s blood only tested “presumptive positive” for ecstasy.

But that result was based on one test and subsequent tests didn’t detect the drug, TMZ said. The ultimate conclusion is that Bennington was not under the influence of drugs when he died. Authorities also found a prescription bottle of Zolpidem, the generic name for Ambien, on his dresser. Moreover, there was a pint glass of Corona beer, which was less than half full, and an empty bottle of Stella Artois. Bennington, 41, had reportedly told friends sometime before his death that he had been sober for six months. His widow, Talinda, had also told police that Bennington had been prescribed anti-depressants in the past but had not taken them for more than a year. Bennington hanged himself from a bedroom door at his home in Palos Verdes Estates in Los Angeles County.

He was found with a leather belt around his neck and pronounced dead after being discovered by a housekeeper, TMZ said. No suicide note was found. Bennington died on what would have been late singer Chris Cornell’s 53rd birthday. Bennington and Cornell, lead singer of Soundgarden, were close friends. Cornell’s death, in a Detroit hotel room in May, also was ruled a suicide by hanging. Bennington, a father of six, had previously discussed his struggles with alcohol, depression and suicidal thoughts. In a statement issued in July, acknowledged Bennington’s “demons.” “We’re trying to remind ourselves that the demons who took you away from us were always part of the deal,” the statement said.

“After all, it was the way you sang about those demons that made everyone fall in love with you in the first place. You fearlessly put them on display, and in doing so, brought us together and taught us to be more human. You had the biggest heart, and managed to wear it on your sleeve. Bennington and Linkin Park skyrocketed to stardom following the release of “Hybrid Theory” in 2000. The debut album became one of the biggest albums of the decade, selling more than 11 million units.

The band followed it up with the multi-platinum “Meteora” (2003) and “Minutes to Midnight” (2007). In 2013, he was recruited to be the singer for Stone Temple Pilots, one of his favorite bands growing up in Arizona. This story was updated to include an updated report from TMZ that said that toxicology tests concluded that Chester Bennington was not under the influence of drugs when he died.
